When Alex and I bought our home two and a half years ago, we kind of fell into it head first. We knew we wanted to live in the city and we were open to purchasing something we could update (with no idea how to do anything ourselves). As most things we do in life, we made an offer on our house with the intention of updating the master shower and kitchen immediately, finding a contractor at the eleventh hour to help us finalize our loan approval process to move forward. As luck has it, we loved our contractor and everything he did for us, updating our 1885 house to be what we wanted it to be without losing a lot of its character…on time and within budget.
Fast forward to now, and Alex and I are finally making some updates that we wanted initially but needed to give it some time. As you have seen on my instastories, we are making some cosmetic changes along with some full gut rehabs with the intention to have everything complete by mid-late summer. My favorite is buying the decor. I know plenty of people who look forward to picking out tile and fixtures and carpet but that is not something I have a ton of interest in. Alex could send me a list of three carpet samples and I honestly just want him to make that decision. I can find an area rug or piece of furniture to help cover up something I’m not obsessed with.
I really try to buy most things for the house on a budget knowing that I still want good quality. We have had our couches in our living room from West Elm for 6 years and I don’t anticipate getting rid of them any time soon. We have plenty of pieces from Ikea that have stood the test of time and we find a lot of things from Joss and Main, Home Goods and World Market. While I love them, you probably won’t see a lot of Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn in our house as I learned very quickly that having a dog that sheds black hair and a child who is constantly covered in food is not good for expensive, high end items. Even Amazon, although not as neat and pretty in the website, has some good things if you look hard enough. Putting together my “wish list” has been my favorite part of all of this and I love seeing our rooms come together from the original vision I had.
Since our living room is just about done (looking for a new throw blanket and two new pillows for one couch), I included links to everything here for those of you asking. Another room update coming soon!
